The first step towards the Olympic Games in Tokyo are the World Championships in Doha (Qatar). The first three national federations of the team finals are directly granted the ticket for Tokyo 2020. In addition, the best 24 teams from this final qualify for the Gymnastics World Championships Stuttgart 2019.

The remaining nine places for the Olympic team competition will be awarded on the basis of the results of the qualification competition. Nations left without starting places might still be able to compete in Tokyo with individual starters. The first chance to do so will also be at the World Championships 2019, where the best twelve men and 20 women in the all-around of the qualifying competition will secure a ticket for the Olympic Games. However, only one gymnast per nation and only from those countries that do not start with a team. In addition, the three best gymnasts of each apparatus final in Stuttgart, with the exception of those from already qualified teams, can book their Olympic ticket.

It will be possible to secure an additional starting place at the all-around World Cups in March/April 2020 in addition to the qualification via the overall ranking list. Places will be assigned to nations that finish in one of the top three spots in the overall ranking. Only the best twelve countries of the 2019 World Championships are allowed to participate in the series with one athlete per World Cup competition.

From a total of eight apparatus World Cups, the best athletes per apparatus (four women, six men) will secure Olympic participation, but only with a maximum of one gymnast per nation. This ranking is based on the three highest results per athlete per apparatus. Gymnasts from countries that are already participating in Tokyo with a team can obtain an additional ticket here, but only if they were not part of the national team in the decisive team competition.

The last chance to take part in the Olympic Games will come at the respective continental championships. Here, the two best all-arounders – only one in Australia – can win a ticket if they did not participate in a successful team qualification.
